SEMESTER WRAP-UP

With the start of my second semester dawning upon me, I though I'd wrap-up everything I read for the first semester in one little post. But this isn't everything I read. A lot of our reading was available online, or I purchased an iBook version, or we were given chosen pages of a book to read in our module packs. However, this is a pretty big chunk of it!

I absolutely loved my modules this semester, particularly Postcolonial & Global literatures, as well as Victorian fictions. But the reading material for my James Baldwin module changed my life, because James Baldwin was probably one of the best writers to set foot on this earth. Just saying. Grateful for the awesome, and diverse options my university offers. JB was only a 15 credit module though, so I'm picking up Black Writing in Britain next semester, and I have a feeling it's going to be fabulous.

So the first picture consists of some of the texts I read for Victorian fictions (left) and some of my reading material for PC and Global literatures (right). The second picture consists of a few my James Baldwin texts, but only two Arthurian literature books because I chose to purchase most of the latter on iBooks (saves space, and money).

Pretty much everything I read last semester was 5/5 (Nervous Conditions, The Fire Next Time, Translations, The Moonstone etc.), with a few 4/5's (Harare North, Midnight's Children, Vanity Fair). The only reading that I found to be a tad insufferable was the Arthurian stuff. Guys, Arthurian mythology is all fun and games when you grow up watching The Sword in the Stone, and binge watching the BBC production of Merlin, but when it comes to reading repetitive, old english versions of the tales, and writing essays on them? Not so fun.

I've somewhat begun collecting the books I need for next semester. This first semester drained my bank account tbh so I need to hunt for a few books in my university library this time round, rather than lazily buying them all off Amazon, and deeply regretting my sloth-like tendencies when I finally summon up enough courage check my bank balance...

Ah well, if you've got to spend money then it might as well be on books, right! ;)

  1. oooh, your modules sound so interesting! particularly the post colonial, I'm a history and politics nerd so. I still need to get to Dickens at some point, BUT I am reading Pride and Prejudice atm, and loving it, so that's something! happy reading, safah - oh, how i wander.

    1. I've only read two Dickens novels so far, and while Bleak House had it's 'bleak' moments it was still an enjoyable read for me personally, and I loved Great Expectations :D Pride and Prejudice is one of my favourites! Glad you're enjoying it :') my modules really are great. I'm so grateful that my university has such diverse options. And I love a bit of history and politics myself tbh :')

  3. Such interesting modules and texts! I'm making 2016 the year I finally read Baldwin, as I should've done so a long time ago.

Thanks for your comment on my book haul post. Funnily enough, I had those two authors on my wishlist - made me excited to check out their work :)
