LEANING TOWER OF THE UNIVERSITY READING LIST

I thought I would do a quick post about the books I'll be reading this semester! Actually, these are only the books I need to read for the first few weeks of first semester. There is still SO much more to come. OH THE JOY.

I've already read a few of the books on the list, they're the ones with ratings next to them... obviously?

The fourth module I'm taking this semester is Arthurian Literature but I don't actually own the books on the reading list yet because I was hoping to get away with purchasing the free ebook versions. The reason I've been hesitant to buy them is because Arthurian Literature is something I probably won't be re-reading over the years, whereas I knew I would love all the novels listed below and cherish them for years to come!

Some of our mandatory reading is given to us in the form of a module pack, which saves us from spending more money! So many yay's!

SO. WITHOUT FURTHER ADO: (not 100% sure what that means but hey ho)

Postcolonial and Global Literature:

  • The Grass Is Singing - Doris Lessing: 5/5
  • Nervous Conditions - Tsitsi Dangarembga: 5/5
  • Midnight's Children - Salman Rushdie

James Baldwin and the American Civil Rights:

  • Go Tell It On The Mountain - James Baldwin: 5/5
  • Giovanni's Room - James Baldwin
  • The Fire Next Time - James Baldwin

Victorian Fictions:

  • Wuthering Heights - Emily Bronte: 4/5
  • Jane Eyre - Charlotte Bronte: 5/5
  • Vanity Fair - William Thackeray
  • Bleak House - Charles Dickens

Have you guys read any of the books on my list? Which do you prefer, Wuthering Heights or Jane Eyre? And do you guys have any tips on how to get around spending ridiculous amounts of money on books? As a literature undergrad I would very much appreciate any suggestions!

  1. VICTORIAN FICTION IS WHERE IT'S AT!!!! I'm actually quite jealous of the fact that you HAVE to read Vic Lit for you course - when I studied Literature at A Level, there was NOTHING about Victorians. Oh, except for Thomas Hardy's poetry about being a miserable old man. Sigh.
And Jane Eyre will ALWAYS be better than Wuthering Heights in my mind!

  2. I loved Wuthering Heights and I am yet to read Jane Eyre - I've only recently started venturing into classics and realising they're not so scary, after all LOL! As for where to get cheaper books, have you tried Abe books? It's quite like Amazon's new and used section. Also, charity shops are my favourite for bargain books :) You'll certainly find classics in there, as well as newly released books. It was great to see your reading list! I'd love to see future ones, too :)

    1. I don't know why I've never considered Abebooks for university :o used books are pretty much the only solution to a literature degree. I definitely need to start branching out to charity shops! There aren't that many in my area unfortunately but I wouldn't mind going out of my way for a discount :')
